N/AAppearance:
Peeves is a small man who (if he ever bothered to spend much time on the ground) stands about four feet tall, with a skinny build (though he weighs absolutely nothing) and a taste for garish clothing. His skin is pale, and his hair is black, appearing to be a mixture of deep purples, blues, and greens in the light not unlike raven's feathers. His hair is naturally a bit wavy, but he often seems to slick it back somehow, giving it a gelled look that fits him all too well. He is almost always grinning widely, exposing a set of perfectly straight, gleaming white teeth in a wickedly mischievous expression that makes many of the students wisely run for cover. He has a long, rather thin nose with something of a point to it, and very slightly pink-tinged lips that only show any color at all when he is not smiling. He has wicked, dark eyes similar to his hair, which reflect different colors depending on the lighting. Over these eyes are a pair of black eyebrows that sweep upwards, giving them a look that almost resembles horns. Peeves's ears are small pointed, sticking out from the sides of his head just a little bit. His limbs are scrawny but deceptively strong, with long, bony fingers that are well-suited for picking the locks on cabinets and other such things that no one is meant to get into. His voice is rather high and harsh, coming out as an evil cackle more often than not.Personality:
As for clothing, Peeves wears anything that isn't drab and boring. He flat out refuses to wear brown or grey, and will only wear black or white as an accent (such as polka-dots or stripes). His favorite clothes are a highlight marker-orange tie and a bright red-and-black hat covered in jingling gold bells. He likes wearing outlandish clothes that almost resemble what circus people might wear, and can be seen in anything from a bright green jacket and yellow pants to electric blue pants and a multicolored vest. He doesn't care whether his clothes match or not, and he never gets hot or cold so he doesn't have to wear seasonable clothing. The only thing he never wears are shorts. He is often seen carrying water balloons, walking sticks, and the like to pelt them at students.
Peeves is a spirit of chaos. He adores chaos, and if a single day goes by where all his attempts at causing it are thwarted, he gets into a very bad mood indeed. He has little to no respect for anyone in the castle, and everyone is considered fair game for his pranks. Even Albus Dumbledore has fallen victim to them once or twice (though Peeves would never dare to do anything to rash as throw a water balloon at the Headmaster). He cares little about most of the teachers, fearing none of them. However, he rarely gets up the gall to directly prank teachers such as Minerva McGonagall or Filius Flitwick. Peeves spends an average day writing rude phrases on the blackboards of empty classrooms (or becoming invisible and writing them behind teachers' backs), throwing water balloons, spreading grease on stairs, and scaring students at every opportunity. He adores chasing the newer students around, and the older students he merely considers slightly more of a challenge because they often know how to defend themselves from him.History:
Most of the time, Peeves's demeanor is mocking and nasty. Sometimes he may act respectful, but it is never more than that: an act. The only person in the entire castle whom he obeys without question or complaint is the Bloody Baron. He enjoys causing havoc amongst the house elves as well, whenever he can get the opportunity. He has been banned from the kitchens, but sometimes he manages to find his way in. At those times, meals can be hours late. The only bonus is that Peeves is normally happy with his prank for several days after that, and rarely bothers anyone directly.
Peeves is extremely confident, and rarely holds back for fear of being hurt. Most spells don't even affect him, and those that do don't last very long. He has never had any of the Unforgiveable Curses cast against him, but it is unlikely that they would affect him either (except perhaps the Cruciatus Curse). In short, Peeves is completely indistructible, and he knows it. It might be possible to drive him out of Hogwarts if the teachers pooled their power, but he has not done anything so terrible as to warrant that yet, and likely never will. Regardless of how badly he vandalizes the place, Peeves does like it at Hogwarts and would be very reluctant to leave indeed. Some have noted this (particularly the Fat Friar, who defends Peeves to the other ghosts and the teachers). He may tear things up, but he never damages the structure of the building, and if it were ever to be directly attacked, one can be certain that Peeves would defend Hogwarts viciously.
Peeves adores causing mischief and chaos, and does so whenever he possibly can. Leaning towards the more evil part of his chaotic nature, Peeves derives great joy from seeing people humiliated and sometimes hurt. He particularly enjoys tormenting Filch. One thing Peeves despises is being controlled. It is possible for a powerful wizard or witch to control him magically, and he once even had to suffer through an entire reign of one of the Headmasters (a mercifully short one) locked in an unused broom closet, magically compelled not to let himself out. He also dislikes people who can't stand a joke (although people who don't mind his pranks confuse him as well).
Peeves's history is unknown by almost everyone at the school. Only some of the oldest paintings remember him, and those often have nothing but bad things to say of him.Ten Characteristics:
Peeves was created soon after Hogwarts began to fill with students. One simply cannot have so many clueless adolescents and so much magic around in the same place without attracting some kind of mischievous spirit. Over the next century or so, Peeves became bound to the Hogwarts castle. He didn't realize that he couldn't leave until about 120 years after he arrived, when he had a row with two of the teachers and tried to swoop out in anger, vowing never to return. He found himself unable to exit through the window, however, and for the next several hours he swooped wildly around the castle, trying to leave out every possible open spot, even the sewer pipes. He simply couldn't however.
Needless to say, life was not happy for any student wandering alone in the corridors for several weeks after that discovery. After his fury at being trapped died down, however, Peeves grew to like the castle, and has even come to consider it his own as much as it is the Headmaster's and the students'. Some of this attachment may come from the simple fact that he is bound so strongly to the castle, but most of it developed naturally.
Still, this love of Hogwarts itself never stopped him from terrorizing its other occupants. He is, above all, a poltergeist, and they are universally chaotic by nature. So he attacks the students and teachers alike, but never the castle itself. His entire existance at Hogwarts has passed by this way, with one single exception.
Around 1450, someone new took the position of Headmaster. Peeves claims not to remember who it was, but he remembers every Headmaster who has ever led Hogwarts. In any case, for the thirteen years that this Headmaster remained such, Peeves was confiscated to a broom closet on the sixth floor and magically compelled not to let himself out. People could open the unlocked door and retrieve things (which he would inevitably throw at them anyway), but Peeves could not leave. He hated that Headmaster more than any other that has come before or since, and his portrait eventually had to be taken down from the wall in the Headmasters' office because Peeves constantly vandalized it.
Other than this small break, Peeves has been terrorizing students for around a thousand years, and anyone can only guess how long he has been around before that, haunting houses and terrorizing villagers.
